Supporting Mothers Through Every Stage of Their Journey
Motherhood is a life-changing experience filled with moments of joy, challenge, and profound transformation. From the early days of caring for a newborn to navigating the demands of raising children, the emotional and mental load can be heavy. At Matrescence Therapy, we understand the complexities of this season of life—and we’re here to help you feel supported, grounded, and understood.
We believe you deserve a safe space to process your thoughts and feelings, regain your energy, and reconnect with the person you are outside of being a mom. Our role is to walk alongside you through both the struggles and the triumphs, offering compassionate care every step of the way.
We are here to support you as you embark on the path to healing, growth, and renewed strength.
Finding your center in the midst of change.
Motherhood doesn’t come with a guidebook. The expectations—both self-imposed and societal—can leave you feeling overwhelmed, drained, or disconnected. Even in the most beautiful moments, there can be undercurrents of anxiety, frustration, or grief for the version of life you once knew.
You may be balancing sleepless nights, work responsibilities, family needs, and your own wellbeing—often putting yourself last. The truth is, you can’t pour from an empty cup. With the right support, it’s possible to care for yourself without neglecting your family, and to rediscover joy in both small and meaningful ways.
You might be feeling:
- Emotionally exhausted or burned out
- Overwhelmed by daily responsibilities
- Lonely or disconnected from friends and loved ones
- Guilt or shame about not feeling “happy enough”
- Strained in your relationship with your partner or family
- Difficulty finding time or motivation for self-care
- Anxious, irritable, or unable to fully relax
Care designed for your life as a mother.
Sessions are typically 45-55 minutes long and done from the comfort of your own home. Our therapists are skilled in addressing a wide range of issues, including managing stress, balancing work and life, mental health concerns, and more. Our first session will discuss how you have been feeling lately, and we will learn a little more about you. We will then work together to create a plan to help you start feeling better. Our approach provides support in a way that fits your busy lifestyle:
- Virtual Therapy: Sessions are held online, so you can attend therapy from the comfort of your own home. You’re welcome to have your children with you if needed, ensuring that you never have to choose between your family and your well-being.
- Experienced Therapists: Our therapists specialize in parenting challenges and postpartum mental health. You’ll work with someone who truly understands what you’re going through and can offer expert guidance.
- Compassionate Care: We create a warm, understanding environment where you feel heard, supported, and never judged. Your experience is unique, and we approach every session with respect and empathy.
- Ongoing Support: Therapy isn’t just about one-time solutions—it’s a long-term process. We’re here to support you on your parenting journey, helping you build the skills and resilience you need to face challenges and thrive as a parent.
What is Matrescence?
Matrescence is the physical, psychological, and emotional change that occurs during the process of becoming a mother. However, here at Matrescence we consider it to be ALL parenthood, not just motherhood. It is considered a developmental phase, much like adolescence, that can involve a variety of things such as hormonal shifts, body changes, identity reconstruction, and relationship transitions. The four components that contribute to the challenges of matrescence are:
- Changing Family Dynamics: adding a child or children to a relationship undoubtedly causes strain and stress
- Ambivalence: the push and pull of wanting a baby close, but also an intense desire for space
- Fantasy vs. Reality: anticipating parenthood will go one way, and then discovering it may look different
- Guilt and Shame: fear that one may never live up to the “perfect” parent.

Insurance & Payment Information
We are currently in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois PPO, BCBS Blue Choice, Cigna/Evernorth, Aetna, and United Healthcare plans. We strongly recommend checking with your individual plan to inquire about therapy benefits. You may be responsible for co-payment or other costs. If we are out of network with your provider and you would like to submit through your insurance, we are able to provide you with a receipt (known as a “superbill”). You are then able to submit this to your provider for reimbursement, if your plan provides this type of coverage.
