Supporting You Through Every Stage of Pregnancy
Pregnancy can be a time of joy, excitement, and anticipation—but it can also bring unexpected stress, physical changes, and emotional overwhelm. At Matrescence Therapy, we understand that this season is about so much more than preparing for a baby—it’s also about caring for yourself as you go through one of life’s biggest transitions.
Whether you’re navigating your first pregnancy, experiencing challenges along the way, or adjusting to changes in your body and relationships, you deserve a safe, supportive space to process your thoughts and feelings. We’re here to help you feel grounded, empowered, and emotionally prepared for the road ahead.
Finding calm in a season of change.
The perinatal period—spanning pregnancy through the first year after birth—comes with many emotional highs and lows. Alongside the excitement, you might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of what lies ahead. Hormonal shifts, physical discomfort, and life changes can leave you drained and more vulnerable to stress.
It’s important to know that your feelings are valid, and that you don’t have to navigate them alone. Counseling can help you process your experiences, strengthen your coping tools, and feel more supported throughout this journey.
You might be experiencing:
-
Anxiety or panic about labor, birth, or becoming a parent
-
Overwhelm balancing pregnancy with work and life responsibilities
-
Strain in your relationship with your partner or loved ones
-
Sadness, mood swings, or feelings of isolation
-
Guilt or shame about not feeling “happy enough” during pregnancy
-
Worry about your body’s changes or recovery
-
Uncertainty about how to ask for or accept hel
Care designed for you.
Sessions are typically 45-55 minutes long and done from the comfort of your own home. Our therapists are skilled in addressing a wide range of issues, including managing stress, balancing work and life, mental health concerns, and more. Our first session will discuss how you have been feeling lately, and we will learn a little more about you. We will then work together to create a plan to help you start feeling better. Our approach provides support in a way that fits your busy lifestyle:
- Virtual Therapy: Sessions are held online, so you can attend therapy from the comfort of your own home. You’re welcome to have your children with you if needed, ensuring that you never have to choose between your family and your well-being.
- Experienced Therapists: Our therapists specialize in parenting challenges and postpartum mental health. You’ll work with someone who truly understands what you’re going through and can offer expert guidance.
- Compassionate Care: We create a warm, understanding environment where you feel heard, supported, and never judged. Your experience is unique, and we approach every session with respect and empathy.
- Ongoing Support: Therapy isn’t just about one-time solutions—it’s a long-term process. We’re here to support you on your parenting journey, helping you build the skills and resilience you need to face challenges and thrive as a parent.
What is Matrescence?
Matrescence is the physical, psychological, and emotional change that occurs during the process of becoming a mother. However, here at Matrescence we consider it to be ALL parenthood, not just motherhood. It is considered a developmental phase, much like adolescence, that can involve a variety of things such as hormonal shifts, body changes, identity reconstruction, and relationship transitions. The four components that contribute to the challenges of matrescence are:
- Changing Family Dynamics: adding a child or children to a relationship undoubtedly causes strain and stress
- Ambivalence: the push and pull of wanting a baby close, but also an intense desire for space
- Fantasy vs. Reality: anticipating parenthood will go one way, and then discovering it may look different
- Guilt and Shame: fear that one may never live up to the “perfect” parent.

Insurance & Payment Information
We are currently in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois PPO, BCBS Blue Choice, Cigna/Evernorth, Aetna, and United Healthcare plans. We strongly recommend checking with your individual plan to inquire about therapy benefits. You may be responsible for co-payment or other costs. If we are out of network with your provider and you would like to submit through your insurance, we are able to provide you with a receipt (known as a “superbill”). You are then able to submit this to your provider for reimbursement, if your plan provides this type of coverage.
